Flood Risk Management

Floods can happen at any time of the year. In the Winter, large chunks of ice can obstruct or block a river's flow. This causes an overflow of water over the river banks, causing flooding. Snow starts to melt and cause run-off in the Springtime. During the Summer months, intense periods of thunderstorms can cause flash flooding. Further precipitation events in the Fall, coupled with already saturated soils, causes rivers to overflow.

Besides weather, characteristics of the watershed (slope, soil characteristics, etc.) affect how much flooding can occur. In the Greater Toronto Area, much of the water generated from flooding becomes run-off. 

Large dams and flood control channels are infrastructures designed to prevent and/or reduce flooding. Some municipalities have flood forecasting and warnings in the case of severe rainfall events including public notices, advice, and information on how to prevent flooding in homes.
