Ionization smoke detector is more sensitive to smaller smoke particles than the photoelectric type detectors. In a fire, the alarm triggering times between these two types are similar. But in a smoldering fire, when big particles are released, photoelectric detectors are triggered earlier.

In the alarming system, gas sensors and smoke detectors usually work together to give more accurate and efficient results. For example, in fire detection, CO sensor and smoke detector are combined in use. The appearance of CO is a sign of fire in its early stages. Normally CO concentration in the air is quite low; therefore in the beginning of a fire, incomplete combustion produces larger amounts of CO. This detection combination is useful to capture the sign of fire.
